Learning Together. Growing Together.
Welcome
Welcome to Project Generation Justice! We are on a mission to spread awareness about how ACE's (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and childhood trauma have a major impact on juveniles and that connection between recidivism and the justice system. Our focus surrounds creating an easily accessible resource for professionals and community members who work directly with juveniles or want to become involved in this cause, providing trauma-informed, evidence-based interventions and other resources to make the justice system more trauma-informed and fix where it is currently failing.
Definitions
Adverse Childhood Experiences are defined as "disruptions to the promotion of safe, stable, and nurturing family relationships and are characterized by stressful or traumatic events that occur during an individual’s first 18 years of life" by the American Psychiatric Association. Similarly, trauma can be defined as "Any disturbing experience that results in significant fear, helplessness, dissociation, confusion, or other disruptive feelings intense enough to have a long-lasting negative effect on a person’s attitudes, behavior, and other aspects of functioning" by the American Psychological Association. The Juvenile Justice System is the part of the legal system, specifically criminal justice system, that is specific to those who are not old enough, above 18, to be part of the adult system. However, sometimes individuals below 18 can be tried in adult court due to the severity of the crime, which is one of the issues we explore in our research and podcast. Juvenile Justice is the line of work that aims to advance the Juvenile legal system to be better equipped for youth involved. Click on the title for more information.
